Experiential Learning and Little Scholars

二零一四至二零一五學年最令我難過的是：不少孩子的英文能力甚強，但寫作的時候仍然難以寫出感受，也未能發揮好的想像力，總是寫不出好的文章，為什麼呢？而英國文學班的孩子發現他們不明白短篇小說或詩歌，縱然他們的英文很好。為什麼呢？

這與孩子缺乏生活經驗有關。孩子的經歷少，與人與事物的接觸面狹窄，導致他們缺少親身感受的生活體驗，因而未能想像與自身有關以外的人和事物。

那麼，可以如何改善這個情況呢？

智愛學教育中心將於暑假期間，舉辦Little Scholars Summer Camps，讓學生透過經驗學習法  Experiential Learning，親身實踐不同範疇的活動，積累感受。日後學生能以這些經驗和感受融會貫通至日常的生活與學習當中，成為一個富有同理心的人，而這些經驗和感受，更能成為寫作的好材料呢！

當然，家長也要多帶孩子接觸不同的人與事物，讓他們對生活有更多認識和感想。

Ms Clare and Shakespeare

The children in my lesson wrote a letter to Ms Clare in England and I posted them. It was Christmas time and now it is 6th February.

All of a sudden in today's class, Devona asked me, 'Is Ms Clare coming to Hong Kong?'
I was confused, 'Who is Ms Clare?'
Devona said, 'Ms Clare, the Ms Clare who we wrote to.'
Other children were all saying, 'We haven't got the letter back from Ms Clare yet.'
'Oh, Ms Clare! You saw the notice about the Shakespeare workshop which Ms Clare is going to give in the holiday!'
'Yes, Ms Clare! Yes, Ms Clare!'
'Oh, Ms Clare has been very busy with her writing and now she has some time and she would like to come here to meet you all. Plus, she will give each of you a present! And of course, she will come to our lesson and have some drama games with all of us!'

Never underestimate a child's memory and always keep your promises to a child. So Ms Clare is coming to visit our Friday writing class students with a lot of presents from Oxford! And Ms Clare will give two workshops on Shakespeare. I can't wait.

１）Teachers Seminars

On our experience helping people around the world:

     -- Ms. Willow will talk about her experience of helping children in Madagascar

     -- Mr. Adam will share his experience of helping mentally ill patients in Japan

     -- Ms. Stephanie Lui will introduce the ‘We Will Fly Project’, which has been supported by i-Learner for 3 years

２）Exhibition -- Treasure 

In February, you will see eight exhibition boards under the title of ‘Treasure’ in the parents’ corridor and Room Four. This exhibition, held by the Society for Community Organisation (SOCO) (www.soco.org.hk), shows stories of underprivileged children in Hong Kong. Just a short time perusing the boards serves as a reminder to the ways less fortunate people live, and underlines the importance of compassion. Books published by SOCO are also displayed in the corridor and are for sale. All the proceeds will be donated to SOCO to support their continued efforts.

３）Charity Sales to express our love

In order to send blessings to children in rural mountain areas in China, you can join with the Institute for Integrated Rural Development (IRD) (www.harvest.org.hk), a Hong Kong charity organization serving poor villages in rural China, and become a fundraising ambassador for the Chinese New Year ‘Fai Chun’ Charity Sales. By selling just 10 sets of specially designed ‘Fai Chun’, you can help less fortunate children to continue with their studies.

If you are interested in joining our fundraiser, return this slip to your teachers and go to i-Learner front desk to get a donation folder from Cynthia, Kelvin or Claire. Once you’ve done this, you are ready to share your love! All donations and donation folders should be returned to Cynthia, Kelvin or Claire on or before 28^th February (Saturday). A certificate of recognition will be given for your great effort and kindness.

It was a writing lesson. We were learning writing with a structure and the topic was Italy.
